Ironing your business shirt is a pretty simple task but doing it right and having a shirt looking great is a bit tricky.
Firstly make sure you refer to the care tag of all your business shirts. Make sure your iron is not turned up to high.
Make sure your business shirts are clean. As mentioned in an earlier blog “How to remove or prevent creases in your business shirts” make sure if you do use a dryer you remove quickly when finished so the business shirt has minimum creases. Mum’s old trick is to get the business shirts before completely dry. When you put an iron to slightly damp business shirts ironing is a breeze.
A guide to ironing your business shirts
Step 1
Start on the back working from top to bottom. Then move to the pleat, make sure you give the pleat a few laps. This area tends to be fairly creased. Then move to the shoulders. Move the point of the ironing board into the shoulder of the shirt the yoke will then stay flat making it easier to iron flat.
Step 2
Move to the front. Iron the button placket with the point of the iron avoiding running over the buttons. Concentrate on pushing out the creases from the middle to the outer stitching.
Step 3
Now the collar. Start from the point of the collar and work towards the middle.
Step 4
Flatten out the cuffs of your business shirts and iron. This goes for all types of cuffs.
Step 5
It’s time for the sleeve. Lay the sleeve of your business shirt with your seam at the bottom. Manually spread the sleeve before ironing this will help the iron run of the sleeve a bit easier. Start at the pre ironed cuff and work back to the shoulder.
Step 6
Hold the business shirt up and check for creases. If you find any visible creases place you business shirt back on the ironing board and run over with iron.
Starch is a great aid when dealing with cotton creases on all business shirts. Aim to only use the starch on plain fabric. Avoid applying to collar, cuffs and stitching. This can lead to undue wear of these areas. When applying starch always read the instructions prior to application.
Take care of your shirts. Keep them looking good.
